Planting and Harvesting

At this point, the RootMaker system has been in use for at least two growing seasons, resulting in a tree or shrub of considerable size and a well-branched root system. At this stage, you have two options for planting and harvesting. One is to proceed with conventional field planting and harvesting. The other option is to utilize the RootTrapper®, available in sizes up to 60 gallons, which allows for the continued benefits of root-tip trapping for an additional season. This helps maintain optimal root health and promotes further growth before the final planting.

The RootBuilder®II Container

Another option is the RootBuilder® II expandable plastic container. The versatile RootBuilder® II container comes in a continuous roll and can be cut to the specific size container you need, or choose pre-cut options for sizes ranging from 15 to 70 gallons. The container is assembled with a few inches of overlap and secured using cable ties that do not block openings needed for air pruning.

The bottom of the RootBuilder® II is designed to allow roots to penetrate into the soil, as well as into pre-cut RootTrapper® discs or other materials that are impervious to roots, such as 6 mil poly or spun-bonded weed barrier fabric. This feature not only facilitates root movement but also enhances the overall mobility of the container, making it easier to manage during planting and harvesting.

Best Chance for Survival

Each outwardly projecting funnel on the sidewall of the RootBuilder® II container features a hole at the tip  designed to enhance root development. For example, a 30-inch diameter, 18-inch sidewall RootBuilder® II container has a capacity of 45 gallons and contains 1,600 funnel openings. However, these openings represent only 6% of the container’s sidewall, resulting in minimal water loss. The unique sidewall configuration provides shading, which helps reduce temperature and evaporation.

Roots are directed outward toward these openings, and forced to branch yet again by air-root-pruning. If necessary, cable ties can be cut to add another piece of RootBuilder® II and expand the container’s size. This results in a superior tree with a superior root system, given the best chance for survival in any landscape situation.
